Impacts of Drilling
Multi-State Shale Collaborative Research on Drilling Impacts ![]() Shale Symposium 2015: Doing the Heavy Lifting on Shale
Researchers with the Multi-State Shale Research Collaborative joined academics and economists with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland for a shale symposium in Cleveland titled “What Communities Need to Know.” The event featured presentations the shale jobs impact, drilling's impact on communities, the importance of having a Future Fund, and more. Communities in Pennsylvania experiencing high-intensity Marcellus Shale drilling also are seeing significant increases in crime, housing costs, traffic fatalities and rate of sexually transmitted diseases, according to a Multi-State Shale Research Collaborative study. While the pace of drilling activity in West Virginia has been such that many of the human and social service impacts have yet to be felt, the report’s findings demonstrate the delicate balancing act between development of the industry and the challenges it creates for communities. One way in which West Virginia is prepared to meet those challenges is with the revenue it raises through its severance tax and the creation of its Future Fund. Meanwhile, in Ohio's shale industry development, it is too early for conclusive results, but Ohioans can look to trends in Pennsylvania to inform their expectations. Case Studies: Assessing the Impact of Shale Drilling
Researchers with the Multi-State Shale Research Collaborative set out to document the impact of shale drilling on the economy, community, government agencies, and human services in four counties with significant shale development – Carroll County in Ohio, Greene and Tioga counties in Pennsylvania, and Wetzel County in West Virginia. Using publicly available data, press reports, and local interviews, the collaborative has identified both the benefits and costs of drilling, and ways in which these communities have been transformed as a result.
